{"id":2409,"date":"2020-04-20T10:20:53","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T08:20:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/?p=2409"},"modified":"2020-04-20T10:32:01","modified_gmt":"2020-04-20T08:32:01","slug":"industrial-manufacturing-dfm-or-planned-obsolescence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/2020\/04\/industrial-manufacturing-dfm-or-planned-obsolescence\/","title":{"rendered":"Industrial manufacturing: DFM or planned obsolescence"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve stumble upon a fairly common appliance, present in most home, built by million of unit, a TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This model is a GRUNDIG 40VLE5324BG with LED backlight: not starting anymore (one could see the &#8220;Grunding&#8221; logo or &#8220;signal not present&#8221; when flashing a strong light on it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After seeking the net for a solution, removing dozen of screws, accessing the 100cm long LCD panel made of ultra thin glass with COG and flex PCB on side, I finally had access to the culprit: No, it was not the capacitor, not the LED driver, not even a LED but a single connector: PCB to PCB connector, designed to decrease assembly time and cost. As these LED string are serial driven (140V @ 400mA), a single failure will render the whole system useless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/40VLE5324BG_led_failure.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"782\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/40VLE5324BG_led_failure-1024x782.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2412\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/40VLE5324BG_led_failure-1024x782.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/40VLE5324BG_led_failure-300x229.png 300w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/40VLE5324BG_led_failure-768x586.png 768w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/40VLE5324BG_led_failure-393x300.png 393w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/40VLE5324BG_led_failure.png 1365w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just wiggling the connector would start\/stop the backlight:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Peek-2020-04-20-09-55.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"503\" height=\"537\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Peek-2020-04-20-09-55.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2411\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, slight flex, oxidation or poor connector plating cause the problem, and as the LED as serial connected, the connector is oxidized from long arcing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200419_155508.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200419_155508-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2410\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200419_155508-768x1024.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200419_155508-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the connector:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200420_102938-1024x768.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200420_102938-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"2415\" data-link=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/2020\/04\/industrial-manufacturing-dfm-or-planned-obsolescence\/20200420_102938\/\" class=\"wp-image-2415\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200420_102938-1024x768.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200420_102938-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200420_102938-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/20200420_102938-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s strap these connector with a piece of wire and fix this stuff!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cheap 5ct clip will render a 500\u20ac\/USD TV after few years!
