{"id":2442,"date":"2020-12-25T21:02:51","date_gmt":"2020-12-25T20:02:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/?p=2442"},"modified":"2023-04-12T10:23:22","modified_gmt":"2023-04-12T08:23:22","slug":"interstellar-ost-15735hz-high-pitched-noise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/2020\/12\/interstellar-ost-15735hz-high-pitched-noise\/","title":{"rendered":"Interstellar OST: 15.7 kHz high pitched noise"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interstellar is an awesome movie, and the sound track is even better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But after having listened it quite few times the original sound track, I quickly realize there is something wrong, not the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loudness_war\">loudness war<\/a>, something worst: noise pickup during recording, not filtered out during mixing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"887\" height=\"357\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2443\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image.png 887w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-300x121.png 300w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-768x309.png 768w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/image-500x201.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 887px) 100vw, 887px\" \/><figcaption>Track 06: Message from Home showing the 15735Hz peak at 51dB <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost the complete album is tainted, for example, in this track, &#8220;Message from Home&#8221;, is a single piano recording showing this noise standing out clearely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dont get me started it&#8217;s because of the MP3 or format artifact, this is present on any version, MP3, FLAC, and even on Spotify online!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is an extract of this sound track, do you hear it? It hurts!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/06-Message-from-Home-extract-normal-speed.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption>06 &#8211; Message from Home extract normal speed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you cannot hear sounds around 16Khz, no problem, here pitched down version, to 0.5 with the noise is now at 8Khz if you don&#8217;t hear it, you may want to consult a specialist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/06-Message-from-Home-extract-half-speed.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption>06 &#8211; Message from Home extract half speed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because it may sound crazy that a multi million dollar movie, OST and sound track composer (Hans Zimmer) get away with this, I&#8217;ve looked up and found this reddit thread mentioning it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-reddit wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-reddit\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"reddit-embed-bq\" style=\"height:500px\" ><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/audioengineering\/comments\/2mszh4\/whats_up_with_this_spike_at_around_157khz_on_the\/\">What&#39;s up with this spike at around 15.7kHz on the interstellar soundtrack? Only some tracks have it but damn does it hurt my ears :\/.<\/a><br> by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/user\/tomv92\/\">u\/tomv92<\/a> in<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/audioengineering\/\">audioengineering<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/embed.reddit.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"UTF-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, I&#8217;m not crazy after all and it look like it&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pilot_signal\">Pilot Signal<\/a> at &#8220;15.7342657 kHz is used to indicate the presence of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multichannel_television_sound\">MTS<\/a> stereo.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So that&#8217;s it, there is nothing to do, we are stuck with this (at least I can filter out my own version), but please, mixing engineers, next time, pay attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"731\" height=\"906\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-from-2023-04-12-10-18-35.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2464\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-from-2023-04-12-10-18-35.png 731w, http:\/\/www.dotmana.com\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot-from-2023-04-12-10-18-35-242x300.png 242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 731px) 100vw, 731px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Interstellar is an awesome movie, and the sound track is even better.
