However, VMware Player does not provide VMware Tools, a set of programs that considerably improve VMware performance.<\/p>\n<p>The following procedure shows how to extract and install the VMware Tools image from the VMware Workstation &#8220;tarball&#8221; (<span style=\"font-style: italic\">.tar.gz<\/span><\/p>\n<p>1. Download the latest &#8220;Archived Version&#8221; of VMware Workstation in &#8220;.tar.gz&#8221; format at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/download\/ws\/\">http:\/\/www.vmware.com\/download\/ws\/<\/a>. You do not need to be registered nor have a VMware Workstation license key to download this version.<\/p>\n<p>Example:<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: monospace\">wget <a href=\"http:\/\/download3.vmware.com\/software\/wkst\/VMware-workstation-5.5.0-18463.tar.gz\">http:\/\/download3.vmware.com\/software\/wkst\/VMware-workstation-5.5.0-18463.tar.gz<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. Locate and extract the <span style=\"font-style: italic\">windows.iso<\/span> VMware Tools image from the tarball.<\/p>\n<p>Locate the <span style=\"font-style: italic\">windows.iso<\/span> file (example):<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: monospace\">$ tar ztvf VMware-workstation-5.5.0-18463.tar.gz | grep windows.iso<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: monospace\">vmware-distrib\/lib\/isoimages\/windows.iso<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Extract the <span style=\"font-style: italic\">windows.iso<\/span> file (example):<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: monospace\">$ tar zxvf VMware-workstation-5.5.0-18463.tar.gz vmware-distrib\/lib\/isoimages\/windows.iso<\/span><\/p>\n<p>3. Mount the <span style=\"font-style: italic\">windows.iso<\/span> file as a loopback file system, and either share the loopback file system with Samba, or copy the VMware Tools files to a location accessible by your guest system.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: monospace; font-weight: bold\">$ mkdir \/tmp\/vmware_tools<\/span><br style=\"font-family: monospace; font-weight: bold\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: monospace\"># mount -o loop <span style=\"font-family: monospace; font-weight: bold\">vmware-distrib\/lib\/isoimages\/windows.iso \/tmp\/vmware_tools<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: monospace\">    <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: bold; font-family: monospace\">    <\/span>4. In your guest system, run <span style=\"font-style: italic\">setup.exe<\/span> from the VMware Tools directory.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>file).
